Hawaii, our 50th and southernmost State, is an archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most isolated places on Earth—more than 3,500 km (2,000 mi) from the nearest continent. The Hawaiian Islands consist of 8 large islands and 124 small islands, reefs, and shoals. The 8 large islands for which we provide digital data are Hawai‘i, Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe, O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, and Ni‘ihau.

The State of Hawaii is divided into 4 counties that cover the 8 large islands:
  • Hawai‘i County—Hawai‘i Island
  • Maui County—Maui, Moloka‘i, Lana‘i,and Kaho‘olawe Islands
  • Honolulu County—O‘ahu Island
  • Kaua‘i County—Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau Islands

Land area of archipelago: 6,424 mi2 (16,637 km2)
